Moroccan authorities have placed Tangier Mayor Mounir Limouri in police custody as part of an investigation into suspected electoral irregularities linked to the country’s September 23 parliamentary elections.
Limouri was detained on September 28 after returning to Tangier from Malaga, Spain, following an investigation into allegedly irregular election documents discovered at a polling station in the city. The public prosecutor ordered his detention while judicial authorities continue examining the allegations.
The case has also resulted in the detention of five other people, including officials responsible for overseeing polling stations. Morocco’s Interior Ministry has separately announced an inspection commission following reported irregularities in the electoral process.
The investigation has drawn attention across Morocco and North Africa because Limouri is a senior figure in the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), which emerged as the leading party in the parliamentary election. Authorities have yet to establish criminal liability, and the investigation remains ongoing.
