Nigerian comedian and content creator Anthony Odunze, popularly known as Prophet Rolex, has apologised to alleged victims of the TMT Travels and Tours visa scam after facing backlash over his previous endorsement of the travel agency.
Rolex said his ambassadorial relationship with the company ran from 2022 to 2024 and maintained that he had no knowledge of the alleged fraud. He also said his role was limited to promotion and that he was not involved in visa processing, customer funds or the agency’s operations.
The controversy, however, has opened a wider compliance question over the responsibilities of influencers who promote financial, travel or immigration related services.
Celebrity endorsement can become a powerful trust mechanism, particularly where customers rely on a familiar face before committing substantial funds. That creates reputational and consumer protection risks when the underlying business later faces fraud allegations.
For brands and influencers, basic verification of company registration may not be enough. Enhanced due diligence, regulatory checks, ownership verification, complaint history and ongoing monitoring can help identify warning signs before an endorsement goes public.
The TMT controversy is therefore more than a celebrity backlash. It highlights an emerging compliance frontier where influencer marketing, consumer protection and fraud risk increasingly intersect.
For consumers, the lesson is equally stark: a celebrity endorsement is not a substitute for due diligence.
