Nigeria’s upstream oil regulator, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), is seeking the deployment of drone surveillance technology to strengthen the protection of the country’s oil and gas infrastructure as part of a broader partnership with the Federal Ministry of Defence. The initiative forms part of a non-kinetic security strategy aimed at curbing crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism and attacks on critical energy infrastructure while sustaining production growth.
Speaking during a meeting with officials of the Ministry of Defence in Abuja, NUPRC’s Chief Executive, Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, said sustained collaboration with security agencies had contributed to improved production, noting that Nigeria recently recorded crude oil output of nearly 1.8 million barrels per day. She stressed that maintaining and increasing production would require stronger partnerships with security agencies alongside greater deployment of advanced technologies, including drones, to monitor the country’s vast network of oil and gas facilities.
Beyond surveillance technology, the proposed framework includes community-focused, non-kinetic interventions such as youth engagement programmes designed to address some of the root causes of insecurity in oil-producing communities.
