The trial of Nigerian relationship therapist and social media personality Okoro Blessing Nkiruka, popularly known as Blessing CEO, has been adjourned until July 20 after she failed to appear before the Federal High Court in Lagos due to illness.
Blessing CEO is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a two-count charge of alleged obtaining by false pretence and theft involving N36 million.
According to the prosecution, the alleged offences relate to a property transaction in which the defendant is accused of fraudulently obtaining N36 million from a complainant under the pretext of securing a property lease. She has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the trial is continuing before Justice D.I. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos.
At the latest hearing, defence counsel informed the court that the defendant was unable to attend proceedings because she was receiving medical treatment. Following submissions by both parties, the court adjourned the case until July 20 for the continuation of trial.
The case has attracted widespread public attention because of Blessing CEO’s prominence as a relationship coach and social media influencer with a large online following. However, the court proceedings remain focused on determining the allegations through the judicial process.
The adjournment illustrates how procedural issues, including a defendant’s absence for medical reasons, can affect the pace of financial crime prosecutions. While delays are not uncommon in complex criminal proceedings, courts continue to balance the defendant’s right to a fair trial with the need to ensure the efficient administration of justice.
The EFCC has intensified prosecutions involving alleged fraud, cyber-enabled offences and financial crimes as part of its broader campaign to strengthen accountability and deter economic offences in Nigeria. The case against Blessing CEO remains before the court, where the allegations will be determined based on the evidence presented during trial.
Compliance takeaway: The case highlights the importance of conducting thorough due diligence in property transactions, verifying contractual arrangements, maintaining transparent payment records, and promptly reporting suspected fraud. For businesses and financial institutions, robust customer verification, transaction monitoring, and fraud prevention controls remain essential to detecting and mitigating property-related financial crime risks.
