Nigeria’s Federal Government has generated a record N33 trillion in revenue between January and October 2026, following improvements in digital tax administration and the introduction of electronic invoicing systems.
The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, disclosed this during a convocation lecture at the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Oyedele attributed the revenue milestone largely to enhanced digital systems, particularly electronic invoicing, which he said had improved tax compliance, streamlined revenue collection and strengthened institutional efficiency.
Speaking on the theme, Digital Sovereignty and Ethics: Guarding the Economy for the Next Generation, the minister called for increased investment in Nigeria’s digital infrastructure to improve economic competitiveness and strengthen domestic revenue generation.
He also raised concerns over Nigeria’s dependence on foreign digital infrastructure, revealing that approximately 90 per cent of the country’s data is hosted outside its borders.
According to him, the situation creates foreign exchange pressures, limits local employment opportunities and weakens Nigeria’s control over information generated by its citizens.
Citing Nigerian Communications Commission figures, Oyedele noted that the country had recorded more than 157 million active internet subscriptions as of May 2026.
He urged the government, universities and private sector to invest in local data infrastructure, cybersecurity, technical skills and technology development.
The minister further encouraged graduates to embrace innovation, artificial intelligence and entrepreneurship, stressing that Nigeria must move beyond consuming foreign technology to developing solutions capable of addressing local economic challenges.
