The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has warned Nigerians against the careless sharing of personal information, raising concerns over growing exposure to identity theft, financial fraud and privacy violations.
The commission urged citizens to exercise greater caution when disclosing sensitive details, particularly on digital platforms, social media, websites and mobile applications.
It stressed the importance of protecting personal data such as bank details, passwords, National Identification Numbers (NIN), phone numbers, home addresses and other information that could be exploited by fraudsters.
The NDPC also encouraged Nigerians to scrutinise requests for personal information and verify the authenticity of organisations seeking access to their data before providing sensitive details.
The warning comes amid growing concerns about digital fraud, cybercrime and the misuse of personal information in an increasingly connected society.
The commission emphasised that individuals have a responsibility to safeguard their information, while organisations collecting and processing personal data must comply with Nigeria’s data protection laws.
Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, individuals are entitled to privacy and protection against unlawful processing of their personal information.
The commission urged Nigerians to adopt safer online habits and remain vigilant against suspicious links, fraudulent messages and unauthorised requests for confidential information.
