The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has praised the intervention of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, in a financial misconduct case, while warning church pastors, ministers and workers against bribery and corruption.
Speaking to RCCG ministers and workers, Olukoyede disclosed that Adeboye once directed church officials to refund within 24 hours funds traced to church projects and accounts from an individual under investigation for alleged financial crimes involving billions of naira.
The money was subsequently returned to government coffers following the intervention, according to the EFCC chairman.
Olukoyede described the incident as an example of accountability, stressing that religious institutions must reject questionable funds and uphold transparency.
He warned that neither religious titles nor positions could shield anyone from investigation or prosecution for financial crimes.
The EFCC boss also raised concerns about alleged manipulation of church procurement and contract-award processes, revealing that petitions had been received over suspected irregularities involving some church members.
He further disclosed that he once ordered the detention of a senior RCCG pastor over alleged financial misconduct connected to the pastor’s workplace outside the church.
Olukoyede cautioned religious organisations against providing platforms for questionable investment schemes, citing an investigation involving an arrangement that allegedly promised investors 40 per cent monthly returns.
He emphasised that both individuals who offer bribes and those who accept them are liable under the law.
The EFCC chairman urged church leaders and workers to make integrity, financial discipline and accountability essential principles of religious administration.
