The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has raised fresh concerns over weaknesses in customer due diligence across Nigeria’s banking and fintech sectors, warning that inadequate checks are helping fraudsters execute large-scale financial scams.
The anti-graft agency said gaps in the verification and monitoring of customers by commercial banks and fintech platforms have created opportunities for criminals to exploit the financial system and defraud hundreds of thousands of Nigerians.
Customer due diligence is a critical safeguard used by financial institutions to verify customers, understand the nature of their transactions and identify suspicious activity. When these controls are weak, criminals can potentially open or operate accounts that facilitate fraud, money laundering and other financial crimes.
The EFCC’s warning highlights growing concerns surrounding the rapid expansion of digital financial services in Nigeria. While fintech platforms have increased access to banking and electronic payments, the agency’s concerns suggest that stronger safeguards are needed to keep pace with increasingly sophisticated fraud schemes.
Financial institutions are expected to strengthen customer verification, transaction monitoring and other anti-money-laundering controls to prevent their platforms from being exploited by criminal networks.
The warning also places renewed pressure on banks and fintech companies to improve cooperation with law-enforcement agencies and respond quickly to suspicious transactions.
With millions of Nigerians increasingly relying on digital financial services, authorities say stronger compliance systems will be crucial to protecting consumers and preventing the financial system from becoming a gateway for large-scale fraud.
