GHANA BOARDROOM PURGE: MAHAMA SACKS NINE STATE BOARDS IN GOVERNANCE RESET

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has dissolved the governing boards of nine state institutions with immediate effect, triggering a fresh compliance test over governance, accountability and oversight of public assets.

The institutions include the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, GNPC, Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company, BOST, Consolidated Bank Ghana, CBG, Volta Aluminium Company, Ghana Post, TDC Ghana, Prestea Sankofa Gold, the Road Maintenance Trust Fund and the National Sports Authority.

The Presidency directed relevant ministers to implement the decision in line with applicable laws and governing instruments. The dissolved boards are expected to be reconstituted.

The move comes as Ghana continues to place greater emphasis on performance and accountability across state institutions. A separate notice from the Presidency warned political appointees and public officials that conduct undermining institutional authority or effective government policy would not be tolerated.

For compliance professionals, the bigger issue is whether boardroom changes will translate into stronger controls.

Boards are central to financial oversight, risk management, procurement scrutiny, audit supervision and management accountability. Replacing directors can reset responsibility, but it does not automatically fix weak control environments.

The incoming boards will face pressure to examine inherited liabilities, procurement arrangements, financial reporting, related party risks and unresolved audit findings.

The real test for Mahama’s governance reset is therefore not who occupies the boardroom, but whether stronger oversight, transparency and internal controls follow.

Ghana has changed the boards. The compliance test is whether it can change the controls.
