Mirae set is making a direct push into South Korea’s virtual asset market, turning the acquisition of cryptocurrency exchange Korbit into a broader strategy to connect traditional finance with digital assets.
Mirae Asset Consulting has secured a 97.15% stake in Korbit, following regulatory approval for the transaction. The deal is the first instance of an affiliate of a major Korean financial group taking control of a domestic cryptocurrency exchange, marking a significant step in the convergence of conventional finance and virtual assets.
The group has since rebranded Korbit as Digital X, positioning the exchange as a central platform for its wider digital finance strategy. Mirae Asset says it intends to develop an ecosystem spanning traditional securities and digital assets, including real-world asset tokenisation, security token offerings, stablecoins and custody services.
The expansion comes as South Korea strengthens oversight of virtual asset businesses. New rules taking effect in August impose tougher registration requirements on virtual asset service providers, including enhanced checks on shareholders, financial soundness and information technology systems. Regulators are also strengthening anti-money laundering obligations around virtual asset transfers.
That regulatory backdrop makes compliance central to Mirae Asset’s strategy. The group’s chairman has specifically called for strict adherence to AML, know-your-customer, information protection and fraud detection requirements as the business develops.
The acquisition has also raised questions about South Korea’s long-standing separation between traditional financial institutions and virtual asset businesses. Critics have argued that using a non-financial affiliate to acquire Korbit could effectively circumvent those restrictions.
Compliance takeaway: Mirae Asset’s move signals that Korea’s crypto market is entering a new phase, where traditional financial groups are becoming direct operators. That will put greater pressure on governance, AML controls, customer protection and regulatory oversight as the two markets converge.
